Canadian video game development studio Elastic Games has released its asymmetric multiplayer horror title Last Year: The Nightmare. Like other games in the genre, such as Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th, players must choose to be either a “survivor” or a “killer”, where survivors must complete objectives to escape before the killer gets them. Like those other two games, Last Year: The Nightmare is built using Unreal Engine 4, but is entirely first-person, unlike Friday the 13th‘s strictly third-person perspective or Dead by Daylight‘s mixed mode.
Last Year: The Nightmare features five survivors (“Samantha”, “Nick”, “Amber”, “Troy”, and “Chad”) and three options of killer (“Strangler”, “Slasher”, and “Grant”). What’s more, the game adds classes to the survivors (Assault, Medic, Scout, and Technician) and a crafting element, allowing survivors to create & upgrade their own weapons. Meanwhile, killers get access to “Predator Mode”, where the player can essentially unspawn, float to a new location, and then reappear in the game. The features three maps, all located on the “Eastside High School” campus.
Accompanying the game’s release is a nearly two-minute launch trailer featuring in-game footage with the audio of actual player interactions:
The cast of voice actors include Melissa Hutchinson as “Samantha”, Michael Johnston as “Nick”, Erica Lindbeck as “Amber”, Zeno Robinson as “Troy”, Noshir Dalal as “Chad”, Ray Chase as “Strangler”, Elias Toufexis as “Slasher”, and Jon Olson as “Grant”.
Last Year: The Nightmare is PC-only – though Elastic Games didn’t rule out future console ports – and exclusive to the Discord Store for the next three months before rolling out to other digital storefronts. The game is now available for just $29.99:
Halloween night. 1996. A group of teenagers awake to find themselves trapped in a dark, twisted reflection of their sleepy hometown of Forest Hills. As they make their way across the East Side High School campus, they realize they are being hunted by a supernatural force taking the forms of fearsome killers. Relentlessly pursued, the teens must band together to fight back, survive, and escape the terrifying anomaly they have come to know as The Nightmare.
Five players work together and attempt to escape while fighting back deadly killers controlled by the sixth. The group of five must explore the Nightmare and complete objectives while being stalked by a trio of deadly killers. The high-schoolers can arm themselves with bats, guns, and improvised tools to fight back against the aggressors but their best chance to see another sunrise will be strategy and teamwork.
A single player controls the murderers that stalk the Nightmare and must use their wits, with some good, old-fashioned brutality, to overcome the teenagers. In Predator Mode, the killer is invisible and intangible; they can use this mode to set traps and ambush the opposing team. After setting up, they can emerge from the shadows or even burst from the environment to take down their prey. While the monsters that stalk the Nightmare have supernatural speed and inhuman strength, it will be their cunning and malice that carry them to victory.
