Nintendo has revealed a ton of new information on its upcoming platform/combat sequel Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Among the new revelations contained in a nearly thirty minute preview video, are two playable characters from the Castlevania franchise, Simon & Richter Belmont. Both characters were introduced yesterday in a massive, nearly thirty minute video, which began with Luigi looking around a haunted mansion with his flashlight. After being chased by mummies and ultimately vanquished by the Grim Reaper, none other than Simon Belmont shows up to dispatch the reaper before facing off against Dracula. When Simon appears to be on defensive against the vampire king, Richter show up. The parts of the video pertaining to the two Castlevania characters can be seen in the video below:
Nintendo also released individual videos for each character along with a handful of screenshots:
“Simon Belmont” was the main character in the first two NES Castlevania games, 1986’s Castlevania and 1987’s fan favorite Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest (which puts the “vania” in the game genre “Metroidvania”).
Simon’s main weapon appears to be his signature chain whip, though he can also been seen with a double-bladed axe and an alternate blue costume in the screenshots below:
Simon’s descendant Richter Belmont first appeared 1993’s Castlevania: Rondo of Blood for the TurboGraphx-16 Super CD-ROM before going on to, among others, 1997’s fan favorite Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on the first PlayStation, and most recently Castlevania: Harmony of Despair for the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360.
Like Simon, Richter Belmont also features a chain whip, plus a throwing axe, and as seen in the screenshots below, an alternate red outfit:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be released for the Nintendo Switch on Friday, December 7th.
