Showtime has announced that actress Adriana Barraza has joined the cast of its upcoming spinoff horror series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels – which we first reported on back in November. Barraza will play the role of “Maria Vega”, who is described as:
“The powerful matriarch of the Vega family, who will go to any lengths to protect her children from the dangerous world of 1938 social politics, as well as from the chilling supernatural forces invading their lives.”
Barraza’s former genre credits include “Shaun San Dena” in 2009’s Drag Me to Hell and “Guadalupe Elizalde” in FX Networks’ The Strain.
Barraza joins fellow cast members Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Jessica Garza, and Johnathan Nieves. Series creator John Logan is returning to serve as writer & executive producer. Series director Paco Cabezas is also returning.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will begin production later on this year.
1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) is embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.
